The first thing that anyone who is planning to make a change needs to do, no matter how subtle or drastic it may be,
is clean up and clean out.
Empty everything out of all of your drawers, notebooks, cabinets, crevices, etc. Do this one at a time, of course, or
you will find yourself swamped with piles of your stuff. Sort all the stuff you find in each place, as you reach
it, into three piles: The first, stuff that you want to keep in your room and accessible. Second, the stuff that you want
to keep, but put away. Third, junk that you want to throw away. Everything in the third pile put in either the recycling or
trash bin, depending on what the object is. Everything in the second, place carefully in boxes, labeled according to their
contents, and place them wherever you traditionally place boxes of stuff to keep, preferably in a location other than your
room. Wait until you've dusted and cleaned to put back the items in the first pile.
Now that everything is put away, get out the vacuum cleaner and suck up all the dirt and negativity lying stale on your
floor.
Measure all of your pieces of furniture; you will be making a scale drawing of your room and playing around with furniture
arrangements. Using the guidelines below, you will be able to create a layout for your furniture that obeys the rules of feng
shui, creating a good environment in your room.
Remove or cover any mirrors in the bedroom during sleep. Folklore says that if you wake up in the middle
of the night and see your face in a mirror, your soul will be shaken from your body. Reflective surfaces like mirrors, TVs,
and computers tend to disturb sleep.
Reduce electromagnetic fields.
The electromagnetic field of any stereo, clock, or electronic device, too close to your head creates too much active
energy for a time when you need to rest. Place your alarm clock as far away as possible from your bed. Small, battery operated
alarm clocks usually generate less energy that ones that plug into the wall because they have smaller electromagnetic fields.
Remove any water images from the bedroom.
Water creates an energy field of too much emotion. While
it is peaceful, it can make you more vulnerable to depression.
Place your bed so that you can see the door.
Make sure when you lay in bed that you can see the incoming flow of energy when someone enters your bedroom. This way,
you will feel more secure and in control. If moving your bed to this position is not practical, place a mirror in a position
so that you can see the door reflected in the mirror when you are in bed.
Don't close the door to your room totally. Ever.
Closing the door will create a stale, trapped environment, and will thus affect your mood and lifestyle.
Get the phone and answering machine, TV, and stereo out of your room.
The bedroom's original function was for sleep and relaxation, and while you may feel that falling asleep to the TV doesn't
violate this policy, these items are just distractions.
Haul out bookshelves and piles of books, magazines, bills, and paper.
These items also distract you from sleep and keep your mind busy. A few books available for pleasure reading are fine,
however. If you must have magazines, bills, and paper in your room, keep it covered and out of sight at all times. Remember,
the bedroom is a place for resting, not working.
Remove office equipment, computers, prints, and desks from the bedroom.
These items have large electromagnetic fields, so remove them, or push them to the opposite corner of the room from your
bed.
Get the excess furniture out.
Keep it simple, and you will feel more balance, peace and calm. In addition, excess furniture can stifle the energy of
your bedroom.
Play around with these principles on your room plan. For now,
return here to learn about the other two pieces to creating a good environment in your bedroom: color and personality.
